CurtainStudio X House Rules

22 Jan 2019 By CurtainStudio

To celebrate our partnership with House Rules, we wanted to share a few of our own 'rules' when looking to update your window furnishings..

1. Get what you NEED & what you WANT
2. Go high & wde
3. Kiss the floor
4. Embrace the swatch
5. Don’t forget about hardware
6. Ask the experts

1. Get what you need and what you want

Although most of us want to get straight to the fun decisions like how to style a room, a home and choose designs, styles and fabrics, it’s good to first start by thinking how your new curtains will function in the room to best serve your needs.

Are you looking to block out an annoying streetlight? Do you need a bit of privacy? Want to save some money on your heating or cooling bill? These are all questions with Curtains, Blinds or Shutters as the answer. We offer block-out, sheer, lined and thermal insulating curtains and we must mention Venetians, Shutters and Rollerblinds! Once you determine the best window covering to suit your personal need, then the fun stuff happens as you explore our numerous fabrics, finishes, prints and colour options.

2. Go high & wide

To create the illusion of a taller window and bigger room, mount the rod 10 to 15cm above the window frame—or even better, halfway between the frame and the ceiling molding. Extending the rod 10 to 15cm beyond the frame on each side (left and right ) makes a window feel grander and allows extra light to stream in when the curtains are open. To get this look, be sure to account for the extra fabric when measuring for the length and width of your curtain or blind.

3. Kiss the floor

There are a lot of opinions about curtain length, and certainly more than one “right answer” but at Curtain Studio we’re always looking to maximize both design and practicality.
We recommend hanging curtains to lightly skim or “kiss” the floor. This look is classic and tailored, if you open and close the curtains a lot they’ll easily fall back into place every time you move them. The fabric should just touch the floor or hover 1cm above. When you ‘kiss’ the floor this will also assist with insulation!

4. Embrace the swatch

We get it….upgrading your window soft furnishings is exciting as they play such an important role in the look , style and feel of your home…it’s SO TEMPTING to rush a decision! But you can’t always judge in the store what will look best in your home. The lighting is never the same and you can’t drag all your furniture in for a match. That’s why we loan out large fabric swatches of both our custom and ready to hang fabrics. We want you to make the best choice!

5. Don't forget about hardware!

Hardware can be a bit of an afterthought when we are talking about curtains, blinds and shutters. But it shouldn’t be! What holds curtains on the wall can be an important design element. Ask yourself what finish do you want curtain hardware to be? Do you want to make a statement with the curtain rods or let them go as unnoticed as possible? Do you want your curtains to drape softly tied back creating a unique look? Do you want a unique colour on your roller chain? We have a large range of quality tracks, rods, holdbacks and finials in ready to install and custom designs to compliment any décor.
