Mixing patterns can be considered a pretty bold move by some, but it can also be very appealing and effective if done right. This may seem intimidating at first, but once you have read these tips and tricks, you will be one step closer to becoming a pattern coordinating pro!
Choosing your Patterns
Firstly, you will need to decide what look you want your room to have. When you mix patterns in a room, you need just the right combination of colour, shape, and size to create a harmonious vibe within your space. Patterns will play a big role in the overall feel of the room so its important to get it just right. For example, florals will give a more feminine feel, bold contrasting patterns will give off an energetic and dramatic vibe, and animal prints give a more glamourous and upscale look.
Incorporate Different Sized Patterns
Make sure to choose patterns of different sizes. It is best to have one large scale dominant pattern, matched with smaller scale patterns which will compliment and accent the dominant design. Having too many large or small scale patterns can make a room look overwhelmed and will not give you the harmonic look you are going for. Some patterns are very versatile such as chevron or herringbone patterns, however, they can come across as overpowering if used in high quantities.
Use similar colours together
Choosing a colour scheme is also important in creating an aesthetically pleasing environment. Try choosing a colour scheme within the same tonal family or colour palette to start, and then insert a contrasting colour to really bring interest into a room. If you are wanting to use bolder colours it is helpful to be aware of the 60-30-10 rule. This means that 60 percent of your room should be a dominant colour, 30 percent should be a secondary colour, and 10 percent as an accent colour. This is the time to insert your bolder or brighter colour to give the room its wow factor!
Combine simple and complex patterns
Intricate patterns can be complimented by a simple pattern to provide variation and contrast without detracting from the overall aesthetic of the room. Patterns should have a similar feel and theme, and have the ability to visually enhance a room without looking cluttered. Patterns also work best when they are paired with solid colours. This ensures that the pattern really stands out and doesn’t get lost within other patterns you may have around the room.
Incorporating patterns and curtains and/or blinds
Window furnishings are an important part of giving your room its final touches. Ensure that the curtains and blinds compliment the patterns and colours you have chosen for your space to give the harmonious look you are going for. If your room is already heavily patterned, we would suggest choosing a block coloured curtain to break up the space. On the other hand, if your room is looking quite simple and you are wanting something just a little bit extra, try a bold patterned curtain to really add interest and bring the room together.
